Bethersden Primary School

British Values

In accordance with The Department for Education we aim to actively promote British values in schools to ensure young people leave school prepared for life in modern Britain.

Pupils are encouraged to regard people of all faiths, races and cultures with respect and understand that while different people may hold different views about what is ‘right’ and ‘wrong’, all people living in England are subject to its law.

At Bethersden Primary School, we define the values in the following way:

Democracy - we have a say in what happens at school
The rule of law - we all follow the rules to keep everybody safe
Individual liberty - we are free to be who we are
Mutual respect - we respect others regardless of faith, race or difference

We explore and promote these values through:

  • Whole school and class assemblies
  • Our values which promote Belonging, Compassion, Respect, Collaboration, Creativity and Resilliance
  • Democracy week, which celebrates and explores democracy in our school and more widely
  • Our school council and head pupils, all of which are democratically appointed and have a genuine voice on school life
  • Pupil conferencing to gather children's ideas and viewpoints
  • Offering a wide range of books and resources that reflect the diversity of people
  • Challenging stereotypes
  • Curriculum areas, particularly RE and PSHE offer opportunities to deepen understanding of these concepts
