British Values

In June 2014, the Secretary of State for Education announced that schools would be required to actively promote British values from September 2014.

The British Values are defined as:

  • Democracy
  • The rule of law
  • Individual liberty
  • Mutual respect
  • Tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs

The aim of promoting British Values is to ensure that:

  • children become valuable and fully rounded members of society who treat others with respect and tolerance, regardless of background.
  • young people understand the importance of respect and leave school fully prepared for life in modern Britain.”

At Bethersden Primary School we ensure that the fundamental British values are introduced, discussed and lived through the ethos and vision of our school.  The values are embedded throughout the curriculum but in particular within the children’s Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural education (SMSC) in the children’s RE and PSHE lessons.

For full information of how we promote British Values please see our Promoting British Values Policy.

In addition to promoting British Values the school also has a statutory duty to safeguard our children from potential risks of extremism and radicalisation.  This is known as the ‘Prevent Duty’.  For a summary of this please see our leaflet for parents: Prevent Leaflet or for full information please see our full Preventing Extremism Policy.
